WOW! So much has happened!!!
I am so sorry everyone. I just realized that I have not posted anything here since the beginning of school. My greatest and most sincere apologies to all of you.
Here are updates on what's been going on:
- After the devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina, practically every organization on campus quickly organized a table or road block or barbecue to help out. I have to admit that in some ways I was surprised, and in others I wasn't. The ladies of Kappa Chi, with some help from our brothers of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, also organized a table on Tuesday,September 13 from around 10 am till around 2pm. The goal was to collect mostly personal items, such as perms(yes perms!), diapers, toothbrushes, feminine products, etc. We also collected monetary donations, clothes, blankets, and practically anything we felt that anyone could use or would need. UAB gave generously, and by the end of the day, we had filled about 9 or 10 boxes(I think) with donated items. Some of the stuff will go to the American Red Cross, some will go to the Salvation Army (mostly the clothes), and still others will possibly go to individual families or people. Thanks to all who brought anything.. and even those who wanted to give, but could not.
- About 3 weeks ago, a few of the Kappa Chi Members got together and decided to participate in the Phi Beta Sigma Talent Show held Friday, September 16 during their official week (Sept. 11-17). At first, we decided to sing the Gospel Medley by Destiny's Child. Though we did have a good first rehearsal with this song, by the second rehearsal, most of us decided we wanted to sing something different. Someone suggested "Cater 2 U" from Destiny's Child 'Destiny Fulfilled" album. After a lot of work (Especially by our un-official vocal and parts coach, Marquita Anthony '05) , a WHOLE LOTTA LAUGHING, and a few fustrating moments here and there, we came up with some incredible harmonies, a simple, but creative visual set-up, and a performance that will live with us forever. Our fabulous soloist were Lorenda Warren (aka Pinkie), Takeshia Long, and Robin Diggs, with a stirring finale by Marquita Anthony. Also participating were Chancey Taylor, Lois Jones, Sharifa Wip, and Deidra Brown. Everything from the clothes (themed Black and Sexy) to the roses in our hair suggest sultry servitude to those who were worth it to us.
All of this, combined with a wonderfully supportive audience, got us
2nd Place!!!!
In addition to the group singing, Lorenda and Marquita also participated individually in the same talent show. As their sisters, we showed them all the love and support as LOUDLY as we could(and we were all in the back)!!! Lorenda sang a soul-stirring rendition of Deborah Cox "Nobody's suppose to be here". Marquita sang an accapella version of Beyonce' Knowles "Dangerously in Love". Both performances were absolutely fabulous...I wanted to see both of them win because I thought the deserved it. However, the judges had the final decision...
MARQUITA TOOK 1st PLACE!!!
CONGRATULATIONS!!!
Hopefully, I will be able to find someone who video taped our performance so that I can possibly post it here along with pics. Thanks also to Nikki and April for helping us set up the chairs onstage for us. You guys did a great job!!!
Well, this post is already too long...be back with more soon.
